Gday and Welcome to Tech Talk , Throughout my
time in Kalbarri fixing computer problems I have identified key problems
with general computer maintenance that can be rectified by the owner of a
troubled computer , For Windows XP and Vista only.
This Month I will be covering some ways to improve your
computer performance , you will need to take this advice at YOUR OWN PERIL ,
I will not be held responsible for any complications you may encounter.
Maintenance Basics
First things first clean up your desktop (Desktop is your main screen).
What I mean by clean it up, is
you must remove NON ESSENTIAL items , for example Photos , Programs ,
Shortcuts , Documents , I am not asking for you to delete these , but simply
remove them from your desktop.
The place for these items is in
the MY DOCUMENTS folder .
Next you need to do a DISK
CLEANUP , this can be located under
START / ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS / DISK CLEANUP
This make take a few moments to complete , Please be patient , IMPORTANT
please read all check boxes
before proceeding , if you are not happy with what is ticked , just remove the
tick from the box by simply
single clicking the tick itself (do not double click it).
From here you will need to complete a DISK DEFRAGMENT this is located
under
START / ALL PROGRAMS / ACCESSORIES / SYSTEM TOOLS / DISK DEFRAGMENTER
Again this may take some time to complete and you can safely defragment the
selected drive , generally
your drive letter will be (C:) , please not there can be exceptions to this as
the can be (C:) (D:) (E:)
and so on.
This should be a minimum start for
you at home , Please note this will NOT speed up your internet speed.
Further help can be found at the
Kalbarri Telecentre with courses that may be run throughout the year.
Cheers Wayne Dewar
